Lifestyle expert, HGTV host, and author of "Styling for Entertaining," Susie has perfected the art of decorating inexpensively. "One year I had an old cream silk piece of fabric that I used in my daughter's room for drapes. I made it into a tablecloth which draped all the way to the floor. It gave a very dramatic effect. Then I brought in simple white dishes that I had as everyday dishes." She then got out a few wooden and glass bowls and added pinecones, berries and dried artichokes. "Then I rounded up random ornaments that I hadn't used on the tree or in the house and added them to the bowls. It was a beautiful table."
Silver mesh baskets are also done inexpensively. "I put white tea lights in little round silver mesh baskets that I had bought at an after-Christmas sale one year -- I bought the whole box for under $10.00. I grouped several baskets and candles by threes and put them on the coffee tables at home and gave some as house gifts when we'd go visit around the holidays."
For special friends, Susie buys a random plate for under $3.00. "I buy the plates in colors that I know my friends have in their kitchens, place the plate in a beautiful box with two-toned tissue and wrap in gold wrapping paper that I buy in huge rolls. Suddenly that plate becomes very special."
