Questions to ask a child care provider

Beyond the usual discussions about a potential child care provider's experience, education, child/teacher ratios, rates, etc., there are questions you can ask to gauge the personality or temperament of a particular nanny, teacher, sitter or facility.

Use the questions below as a starting point as you decide what issues are important to make child care work for your family.

  • How frequently will I receive updates on my child's progress?
  • Can I drop in any time? If not, when is visiting allowed?
  • What steps would you take if my child were injured?
  • How would you mediate a dispute between two toddlers or preschoolers?
  • Do you believe that spanking is appropriate under certain circumstances?
  • How would you react if my child refused to eat a snack or meal that you prepared?
  • How do you handle separation anxiety?
  • What steps do you take to secure your home or facility?
  • At what point do you expect a toddler/preschooler to be potty trained? How do you facilitate the potty training process?
  • What is the schedule like at your facility for a child of my child's age? Or, for an at-home provider, what activities will you plan to keep my child stimulated?
  • What is your policy regarding illness?
  • What is your late fee policy?
  • How do you encourage physical activity when the weather is bad?
  • How much time do the children spend watching videos or television? What types of videos and TV do you allow? Ask for some examples.
  • How long do teachers and staff typically stay?
