Questions to ask a holiday decorator

It might be the season of good will to all, but you still shouldn't let down your guard when hiring a professional to put up your home's exterior decorations.

Training and credentials

Do they have proof of insurance?
Where and how were they trained?
Are they trained to work with electricity?
Will they be there next year?
Do they have referrals and photographs of their work?
Do they have uniformed crews?

Service inclusion

Are decorations customized for your property?
Is their program flexible to offer changing looks and colors over time?
Do they proactively service decorations, or must you call them?
What type of installation hardware do they use? (Staples and nails can damage your home.)
Is everything -- general maintenance, takedown and storage, etc. -- included in the service?
Do they give you decorating options that allow you to build your program over time?

Product quality

Do you have to buy the decorations?
Do they use only premier quality products that are consistent from year to year?
Do they exclusively use outdoor UL-approved extension cords?
Do they use garlands and wreaths that are of decor quality; do they have samples you can inspect?
What is the bulb life on their mini lights and C-bulbs?
Do they use 15-amp, commercial timers that are capable of handling the power needs of outdoor decorations?
