Average daily costs for various European cities

Headed for Europe this summer?

Your hard-earned American dollars will last a lot longer in Amsterdam than they will in Rome.

Consumer Reports Travel Letter analyzed the cost of lodging and meals and other expenses in popular European vacation cities by studying the U.S. State Department's "per diem" rates (the average daily allotments paid to federal employees living in foreign countries) over a five-year period.

Single-day costs are based on the average reported costs for a single room at a moderately priced hotel, three meals and incidental travel expenses. The incidental travel expenses are equal to 10 percent of the combined lodging and meal costs.

The chic Italian cities of Milan and Rome make the priciest vacation spots. The most affordable destinations are Aix-en-Provence in the south of France and Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
