Fat finger dialing
ialing the wrong number could cost you. The Federal Communication Commission is warning consumers to carefully dial 800 numbers like 1-800-CALL-ATT and 1-800-COLLECT. Apparently, unscrupulous companies have purchased similar numbers, and are overcharging misdialing customers. So if you accidentally dial 1-800-CALL-LAT, you'll end up paying two to three times what you intended for the call, and never know until the bill arrives. The FTC recently busted a comparable scam.

A company in Florida purchased phone numbers similar to Federal Express and Sovereign Bank. Consumers who misdialed were connected to a recording that instructed them to "press 1" for the correct number, without mentioning that the service cost between $1.99 and $2.99.
