Anchor intro: Going green: It's something more
and more Americans are focusing on by doing everything from recycling
to buying hybrid cars. But saving the earth doesn't necessarily
mean spending your savings. Bankrate.com shows you how you can save
some green by going green.
Voice-over 1: Hybrid cars, solar power, recycling...all
splashy ways to jump on the green bandwagon. But also costly in
terms of time, money or both. But going green doesn't have to be
complicated or expensive; there are dozens of simple ways to save
money while saving the planet. Take entertainment for example:
Voice-over 2: If you like movies, consider
renting instead of buying. Over one hundred thousand DVDs and CDs
are thrown away each and every month at an average cost of 16 bucks
per DVD.... renting is a lot cheaper -- free if you use the library.
Voice-over 3: Same with music. Even if you
download an entire album, you'll spend 30 percent less than buying
a physical CD, and avoid adding that CD to a landfill one day.
Voice-over 4: And speaking of online... you
should be subscribing to an online newspaper instead of a paper
one. Reading online is often free, while the paper version can cost
hundreds per year.
Voice-over 5: Your entertainment center can
consume up to 40 percent of its full operating power even when left
in standby mode. So, flip the switch on everything at once by using
a surge protector power strip. You save money, the world needs less
electricity.
Voice-over 6: And whatever you're doing to
amuse yourself, drink tap water while you're doing it. If we all
drank tap water, according to some estimates, we'd eliminate 60
million tons of waste every year...and save 8 billion dollars doing
it.
Standup: And here's one last tip: Why join
an expensive gym when you can go to a nearby park that's totally
free? Surround yourself with green, maybe you'll think about some
ways to save some green. For Bankrate.com, I'm Kristin Arnold.
