Dr. Don Taylor, CFA, Bankrate.com advice columnist Currency conversion tools

Dear Dr. Don,
What is a good Web site to get the current currency rates for converting U.S. funds to Canadian dollars?
-- Damon Dollars

Dear Damon,
You can get currency quotes on Bankrate that are supplied to Bankrate by Oanda.com. You aren't able to actually convert U.S. dollars to Canadian dollars at that rate, but it's a good ballpark estimate of where you should be able to convert.

If you are looking for actual rates, and are a U.S. citizen, you can compare Oanda's FX Delivery service to rates offered by your local bank.

Dear Dr. Don,
I own a stock that another company wants to acquire in a cash offer valued at 1,140 pence for each share. How much is this in American currency? Thank you.
-- George Guineas

Dear George,
As I told Damon in the letter above, use Bankrate's currency converter to get a rough idea of how it translates from pounds to dollars. With 100 pence to the pound, your 1140 pence equals 11.4 pounds which is worth roughly $22.42 per share.

I'm guessing that you own shares in Gallaher Group Plc, the acquisition target of Japan Tobacco, based on the acquisition price you quoted.

To ask a question of Dr. Don, go to the "Ask the Experts" page and select one of these topics: "Financing a home," "Saving & investing" or "money."
