Online toolbox for retirement planning

One thing's for sure: There's no shortage of calculators and other technology-based tools to assist consumers in retirement planning. And because tools can, and likely will, provide you with varying results, experts advise checking out many of them, keeping your goal in mind -- whether it's finding out how much you should save or the amount of earnings you can expect from your investments.

"First go find out what your employer's got," says Rick Meigs, president of 401khelpcenter.com, LLC. Retirement plan participants can often access free and reasonably priced tech tools and advice.

Call on other companies you have a financial relationship with, too. Many mutual fund companies, for instance, offer planning tools for investors. Just remember that they may be trying to sell you something.
