Taxes: Changes for 2008
Anchor Intro:
Are you getting ready to file your taxes? Before
you do, Bankrate.com shows you some of the good
and bad changes in store for tax season 2008.
Voiceover 1:
Every year the tax law changes, and 2007 was
no exception. In fact, Congress was fiddling
with the law right up till Christmas.
Voiceover 2:
Which is a good thing for those subject to the
Alternative Minimum Tax. The exemption for this
unpopular tax was raised for '07. That's the
good news. But that patch was only for '07 ...
the bad news is that without further Congressional
action this year, it's history.
Voiceover 3:
2007 was also the last year you could choose
to deduct state and local sales taxes.
Voiceover 4:
If you're a teacher, you'll be happy to learn
that your deduction for up to $250 worth of
school supplies is still good for '07 ... but
you may be a bit disappointed to learn it's
history in '08.
Voiceover 5:
And here's another topic for study: The deduction
for college tuition and fees ... this one deduction
could reduce your 2007 taxable income by as
much as 4 grand. But for 2008 ... it's gone.
Voiceover 6:
About the only thing I could find that's better
this year than last: The mileage deduction for
work-related travel goes from 2007's 48.5 cents
to 50.5 cents a mile in 2008.
Standup: Of course,
by the end of the year, Congress could restore
many of these breaks -- a prospect made more
likely by the fact that it's an election year.
For Bankrate.com, I'm Kristin Arnold.
