Memorial Day freebies and discounts for military and veterans

Between all the barbecues and beer, we sometimes lose sight of what Memorial Day is really about.

It’s a day to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military, and to thank those who are serving or have served. Many restaurants and attractions offer freebies and discounts for members of the military (current and former), as a way of thanking them for their service.

Here’s a rundown of places offering freebies and deals for military personnel and veterans. So treat yourself to a fun day with your family; you deserve it.


Food Lion: Offering a 10 percent discount for active or retired military personnel, valid May 29.

Firebirds Wood Fired Grill: Veterans and active-duty service members can score a free lunch or dinner on May 29.

McCormick & Schmick’s: Offering a free lunch or dinner to veterans, active military members and members of the National Guard on May 29.

Sweet Frog: Every Monday in May, active-duty and retired military can receive 15 percent off yogurt.


California’s Great America: Free admission for any member of the armed services (active or veteran), now through May 29. Each military guest can bring six additional guests for a discounted rate of $30 per person.

King’s Dominion: Free admission for all active and retired military personnel, as well as veterans with honorable or medical discharge. Also offering discounted tickets for dependents of military. Valid May 27-29.

Blue Star Museums: From Memorial Day through Labor Day, military personnel and their families can get free admission to museums nationwide. Check out this page to find participating museums.

National Parks: Score a free Annual Pass for free admission to National Parks nationwide. This freebie is offered year-round for current U.S. military and their dependents.

Kings Island: Offering free admission for all active and retired military members, May 26-29. Also score discounted admission tickets for up to six family members.

Knott’s Berry Farm: Active, retired or veteran military personnel can receive free admission on Memorial Day weekend. Score up to six additional admission tickets at a discounted rate.

Michigan’s Adventure: Free admission for military personnel on May 28-29. Also offering up to six additional tickets at a discounted rate for military personnel.

Silverwood Theme Park: All military personnel, veterans, police officers and firefighters can receive free admission May 27-29. Immediate family members can also get discounted tickets.


General Motors: Snag $500 Purchase Bonus Cash on all eligible, new Chevrolet vehicles, 2017 Buick Encore and 2017 GMC Sierra 1500, now through May 31. Valid for eligible service members.
