More than 30 years ago, a relatively unknown actress named Cheryl Ladd became the fourth angel, replacing Farrah Fawcett in the television phenomenon "Charlie's Angels."
Aaron Spelling saw something in the actress, who came onboard in the second year of the '70s mega-hit after the popular Fawcett departed. The former cheerleader and carhop from Huron, S.D., became known as the "innocent" Kris Monroe.
While those days are behind her, the still beautiful 56-year-old actress feels blessed for the "Angels" career. But Ladd has moved on since the big hair and blue eye shadow. She now lives on a sprawling ranch named "Shangri-La" outside of Santa Barbara, Calif.
Living there with her executive
producer husband Brian Russell and their two dogs,
Ladd is now seen hanging out in "Las Vegas," NBC's
Friday night program that has just seen Tom Selleck
replace James Caan as owner of the fictional Montecito
casino.
But Ladd isn't gambling on career choices these days. She's absolutely happy to be hitting the greens and has become somewhat of a celebrity golfer, playing on the pro-am circuit with greats like Arnold Palmer and Annika Sorenstam. She even wrote a book, "Token Chick: A Woman's Guide to Golfing With The Boys." And believe it or not, Ladd is now a grandmother.
Bankrate: You are a very successful career woman who has raised children in the midst of it all. Looking back, would you have done anything differently?
Cheryl Ladd: Oh yeah (she laughs.) I had so much on my plate so young and I thought I was superwoman who could do everything. I was told by the media that we are woman, we are strong and we can do everything. Guess what? That's a lie! Cause then everything suffers. You can't do it all and you sure can't do it all by yourself.
Bankrate: When you got your first big paycheck from "Charlie's Angels," what did you go and splurge on?
Cheryl Ladd: I got a new car -- a Mercedes. It was good!
Bankrate: And your last big splurge?
Cheryl Ladd: Art. My husband and I bought a beautiful piece of art for each other. We have some art that we really enjoy; we buy what we like. We've traveled the world and gone to fabulous museums so we have a sense of -- not that we can afford that kind of art -- but we have a sense of what would be an investment in art, and then just buy what we like.
Bankrate: What's on your to-do list right now?
Cheryl Ladd: My husband and I have a couple of projects we'd really like to develop and I'd like to have an opportunity to be more behind the scenes, producing, creating ... that's still kind of a goal and it's fun to still have goals. I wouldn't say we're overly ambitious but we are still stimulated by creativity.
