Refinance car to get title in your name

Dear Terry,
A year ago my husband and I bought a car "for me." I had no credit history at that time so they used his name on a loan and on a title, too. I am driving the car and he wants me to pay for it. I can and I would, but my name is nowhere on the record, so I won't get any credit for it. I want to know how and where to get the car under my name. My credit history now is good but a little low -- score around 620.

Dear Jenny,
You have a couple of options: You can approach the lender and see if you can get listed as co-owner and borrower on the vehicle, which would then show up on your credit report.

The other option, which is probably more likely, is that you could refinance the vehicle under your name alone or as a joint loan with your husband. Doing it under your name alone will likely mean a higher interest rate because of your relatively low credit score, but it may be worth it to begin building your credit file.
