Picking the perfect personal care home

6. How do I evaluate the caregivers?
Most homes employ several caregivers. Some may have nighttime duty, while others may be around only on weekends. Meet all the caregivers before you make a decision.

"Visit the home more than once. And go at different times of the day. Take a look at how the home seems during the daytime, at night, and on weekends," says Gayle Hersch, professor of occupational therapy at Texas Woman's University in Houston, Texas. This approach also gives you an opportunity to observe the other residents.

7. How do I decide which home is the best choice?
You've done your due diligence and you've found several homes your parent can afford. How do you make a decision? "By following your gut," says Shapiro. "Consumers who rely on their own internal judgments are usually right."

8. How can I help Mom or Dad make the transition?
Before choosing a personal care home, if possible, take your parent to meet the caregivers and the other residents.

"It's important that your parent begin to make some connections with the place by interacting with staff members and a few of the residents. Social relationships are key to a positive transition," says Hersch.

Bring in some familiar belongings before your parent moves in. Arrange family photos on the dresser or have Mom's favorite blanket on the bed.

And try to make it fun, suggests Moreland. "Make it a family outing. Bring the grandkids. If everyone shows some excitement about the new place, it can really reassure your parent," she says.
