The National Retail Federation expects that 4 million girls will become princesses this year for Halloween. "Girls love princesses," says Elowitz. "Anything with a long, pretty dress."

For boys, however, no one costume wins hands down. Retailers have one prediction, though:

"I would say the No. 1 would be Transformers," says Delosangeles. "I think that they're going to be the best costumes. We haven't gotten them in yet, but they should go fast."

It's the same story in Las Vegas, Siegel says. The Optimus Prime Transformer costume is huge.

In the survey by the National Retail Federation, Spiderman costumes just barely beat out pirates, with both expected to make a strong showing at 1.8 million kids.

Toddlers can get into the act as well with specialty costumes that are bound to melt the heart of the most hardened witch or pirate. "Plush fur costumes are popular for toddlers. Lions are the favorite this year."
