Costumes for men
Pirates came in second in the National Retail Federation Survey of top costumes, with about 1.2 million pirates projected to set sail on Halloween.
"Pirates are still big, which is shocking because it's been three years," says Banta. And, he says, an old standby still provides plenty of thrills -- zombies.
If pirates don't shiver your timbers, this year's crop of blockbuster movies provided fodder for plenty of great costumes.
"The Simpsons are pretty hot with the movie that
came out this year. Another movie that has come into the costume
world, 'Halloween' the movie, is proving pretty popular with Michael
Myers costumes," says Siegel. "And of course, 'The 300'
-- people dress up as Spartans."
Superhero costumes fly off shelves, naturally, but Siegel says that one in particular wasn't as hot as they had anticipated. "Spiderman isn't as strong as we thought it would be. It's pretty steady, but it's not crazy."
The National Retail Federation reports that vampires, along with monsters, zombies and "Star Wars" characters, look to be popular with men. Plus, Siegel says, "Police officers are really big with the guys."
