"Any twist on a storybook character; pirates
are another big seller. There are a lot of very revealing pirate
costumes," says Siegel.
"There's so many choices: mermaids, nurses, witches,
everything," says Christine Delosangeles, sales cashier and
downstairs manager of Abracadabra Costume Superstore in New York.
She thinks women like the sexier outfits because they get to cut
loose for the night. "And the outfits are really cute."
If Elvira-style cleavage doesn't appeal, cute costumes with more modest proportions abound. The National Retail Federation pegs witches as the top seller this year, projecting that 5.5 million sorceresses will take to the streets Oct. 31. Other traditional favorites showing up this year will be vampires, cats, princesses and fairies.
While the expense for some extravagant costumes can
run into the hundreds of dollars, the flip side of that are the
clearance-sale items that can provide considerable savings to eager
Halloween revelers, says Greg Banta, founder of Bad Planet Costumers,
a group of Internet costume sites, one of which is BadPlanet.com.
"The prices really run the gamut, but the average for adults is about $50," he says.
Figure you're going to spend 8 percent to 10 percent of the price of the costume on accessories.
If you're buying hats, wigs, boots and makeup, the price can really go up. The good news is that "costumes come with more accessories than they used to," says Banta.
Conversely, "People are buying a lot more accessories than they used to, also. If we sell a pirate costume, we sell a pirate gun or sword, too."
