Bankrate: Are you generally frugal?
Courtney: Actually, the
more money I make, the more frugal I become. I think when I hit 25 I became obsessed
with retirement, so I've used Bankrate and some other personal finance sites.
And the money I've saved now by saving on cable or paying insurance premiums yearly
instead of quarterly or monthly, I funnel into my Roth or 401(k),
because it's extra money that I don't really think about. Bankrate:
Do you have any other frugal tips? Courtney:
My main weakness is traveling. So I would say to research everything online. I
just went to South America, and the dollar goes a lot farther there than it does
in Europe right now, and Machu Picchu is every bit as interesting as the Eiffel
Tower. You'll get a lot of good rates if you shop around online. In Peru, if you
buy your tickets in the airport before you leave instead of buying them beforehand,
you can save $100 or $150, and I just found that out from reading tips online
before I went. Bankrate: Why did
you enter the Frugal $ense contest? Courtney:
I was actually researching mutual funds, and I saw the tip of the month and I
just decided to enter. Bankrate:
Canceling cable is a good tip and something that a lot of people want to do but
just never get around to. Courtney:
You'd be surprised -- the only thing I really miss is CNN. I wish I had that frame
of mind when I was in my 20s, but as long as I get wiser year by year then all
the better. |
