Fame & Fortune: Kristi Yamaguchi

Bankrate: What's your most prized possession?

Kristi Yamaguchi: I'm not really into material things. But I do have this beautiful necklace that my husband gave me after the birth of our daughter, Keara. It's a heart pendant with pave diamonds. I pretty much wear it all the time.

Bankrate: Have you learned any beauty or fashion tips over the years since you've been in the public eye for most of your life that might be relatively inexpensive?

Kristi Yamaguchi: Recently, I learned from a makeup artist to switch up my moisturizers because my skin is so dry no matter how much I put on. She said to find two to three that I like and switch it up so my skin won't get used to a certain one -- just like your hair with shampoos.

Right now I use a Shiseido moisturizer that you can buy at department stores. I use a lot of their products. The last couple of years, I have gotten into mineral makeup. You don't get as much coverage with it but for everyday use and evening out your skin tone, it's a nice light way to go and more natural looking. You can buy some relatively inexpensive ones at department stores, too.

Bankrate: What's your favorite item of clothing you have ever owned?

Kristi Yamaguchi: There are a lot of things I never throw out. But I have this one jacket that I always seemed to get compliments on. It's a nice big, warm, green winter jacket that had a velvety shell with an interesting print. The print has the astrological signs on it. I bought it in Edmonton when I was living up there around the 1992 Olympics.

Bankrate: What's your favorite personal skating costume?

Kristi Yamaguchi: That's a tough choice. That's one thing about skating that captured my heart and that was the costumes. It just seems to add so much to your performance. Obviously, the costumes I wore in the Olympics will always be special to me. One was black and gold and the other was a turquoise blue. I have a pink one that's very simple, yet elegant, that looks like a ballet costume with a rhinestone choker.

I'm not sure how much any of them cost, though, because my uncle paid my bills. But some of the most expensive ones ran between $10,000 and $15,000 and they were the fully beaded outfits. When you're competing, they run around $100 and I never spent anything over $15,000 until I went professional.
