Bankrate: So the wealth
we see on your TV show, did this all come from stand-up, or is it
a more equal mix of stand-up and acting?
Kathy Griffin: It's an
equal mix. I do commercials, stand-up, voice-overs, little parts
in TV and movies. It's all that stuff. I definitely grew up very,
very middle class, and I'm a self-made man.
Bankrate: Is there one
aspect of your working life that is more profitable than the others?
Kathy Griffin: Obviously,
when I was on "Suddenly Susan," I was making most of my
money from situation comedy. Now, I don't know. It's evenly distributed
between commercials, endorsements, voice-overs, touring and guest
spots and stuff. My dream is to do home shopping -- that's where
the real money is -- so I had a meeting with them. My goal is to
be Suzanne Somers, to have more money than God and have a private
plane.
Bankrate: Does she have
a private plane?
Kathy Griffin: Yes!
Bankrate: Oh my gosh.
Kathy Griffin: Exactly.
Who's laughing now?
Bankrate: That's from
home shopping?
Kathy Griffin: It's from
everything. She always works. She does her books, her home shopping,
her live shows. She'll do a series every few years. She does it
all. Those are the kind of people I really admire. I admire Suzanne
Somers, David Hasselhoff and Jerry Springer. Those are my idols.
Bankrate: Because of the
work ethic?
Kathy Griffin: Because
of the work ethic, and because they seem to have a life. Jerry Springer
has so much money, but he's a regular guy. He doesn't take himself
too seriously, he's a very bright guy, and I love that he does his
Air America show for no money and then continues to build his empire.
I like the idea of working a lot and having a real life.
Bankrate:
Do you consider yourself a smart investor?
Kathy Griffin: I am absolutely
a smart investor.
