Bankrate: Do you handle your own finances?
Jane Monheit: I have a corporation. My father,
who's a genius with money, is my manager. He's the owner of a successful
business that he started from nothing. I'm lucky that he not only
has the ability, but that he also shares his time with me. It's
important to have someone you trust managing your money.
Bankrate: What investments do you have?
Jane Monheit: I'm very young, but I've already
started a retirement account. The music business is a funny business.
You can be successful one day and downright unsuccessful the next.
Bankrate: Do you have special equipment or
supplies that you purchase as a singer?
Jane Monheit: There are the clothes I have
to wear on stage; microphones; a cup of tea now and then. Designers
are starting to lend me things to wear, which is funny, now that
I can afford to buy them! But I'm glad they do it. I'm pretty frugal.
Bankrate: What precautions do you have to take
with your voice, considering it's your main office tool?
Jane Monheit: I make sure I get enough sleep.
Not getting enough sleep will really mess up your voice. Also, I
stay hydrated.
Bankrate: What special perks have you enjoyed
in your career?
Jane Monheit: Getting to travel all over the
world and not having to pay for planes is pretty cool. I also get
free stuff, such as beauty products.
Bankrate: Renee Fleming has been endorsing
fancy watches. Have you been asked?
Jane Monheit: I've been offered some opportunities,
but nothing has panned out yet.
Bankrate: What do you consider a splurge?
Jane Monheit: Definitely clothes, jewelry and
shoes! I'm a bad little girl. I try to restrain myself and get quality
items that last a lifetime.
Bankrate: What do you consider to be a waste
of money, no matter how many millions you would make?
Jane Monheit: Really, really trendy items.
I think it's silly.
