  • Credit union membership totals 72.6 million.
  • Total assets in credit unions are $354 billion.
  • Credit union savings stand at $311 billion in savings.
  • Credit union loans outstanding total $228 billion.
  • There are 11,783 credit unions -- 7,065 are federal and 4,718 are state credit unions.

  • Credit unions hold 8.2 percent of consumer savings and account for 23.2 percent of auto loans and 11.8 percent of consumer installment credit.
  • Since the mid-'80s, the number of credit unions has fallen by 33 percent, but their membership has risen by 38 percent, and their shares and deposits have risen more than 135 percent. The proportion of small credit unions has declined while the proportion of large credit unions has risen.
