Is it worth it? Calculate your annual banking fees

Look back over your bank fees Seeing on paper the dollar amount of fees paid to maintain a checking account can be a bit mind-boggling. So pull out that bank statement from under the grocery store ads, grab a pencil and start plugging in the numbers.

Print out the four quarterly worksheets linked below, plus the year total worksheet. Going month by month, record your fees. Then total them by quarter on each sheet, and add up the quarters to see your totals for the year. You may be surprised by how much money you gave the bank, in addition to letting them use your money for free all year.

In general, banking habits will dictate whether the current account is the right choice. It may be time to shop around.
