Workers' personal lives impact attendance, schedule
Bankrate.com

Rules of Thumb For small-business owners, having employees whose personal lives impact their work is as commonplace as flipping over the "Open" sign.

The causes are many -- workers have children who have trips to the dentist, or family members who need to be cared for. According to the National Work/Life Study of Small and Medium Businesses, on average, eight specific work/life issues occurred more than five times per week. The most common: a lateness or absence to care for family. That occurred 1.4 times a week Other common occurrences are a request for a schedule adjustment to attend to a child's school needs, personal and family programs that conflict with work, or a request for time off to take care of an ill family member.

Small-business owners and managers are apparently used to and OK with the concept of balancing work and family. Asked if it is important to have balance, 60 percent of those surveyed said "very important," 24 percent say "somewhat important, and only 17 percent say "not important."
