Teen girls find the big corporate thing a total turn-off
Bankrate.com

Small-business owners may have concluded that today's teenage girls are mainly interested in the almighty buck working on the fast track in a large corporation. If so, they're in for a pleasant surprise.

teenage girls are thinking small -- as in small business -- nowadays, according to a recent survey of 500 girls and 150 boys ages 15 to 18 by the Arthur Andersen consulting firm.

That's where teen girls (and boys, too) expect to be happiest in their work and have the most independence, not to mention a family-friendly work environment, the survey found.

Being a leader is important, teen girls said in the survey, with 87 percent of them expecting to be in a leadership position in the future.

When considering future employment, teenage girls said they would consider owning a small business, being the CEO of a clothing company, working at a job in health services and teaching.

By contrast, teenage girls view working for a large company as merely sitting in an office and making money, and 87 percent said that they would fit in better at a smaller company.

That's good news for small businesses, which have a hard time competing with larger companies for staff. Most teen girls (82 percent) have at least a favorable impression of small business, while only 65 percent have at least a favorable impression of large firms.

When assessing their educational goals, teenage girls are more likely to list medicine or other health services (17 percent), education (10 percent) and fine arts (10 percent) as likely majors in college. Though girls say computer knowledge is important, they are less likely than boys to choose computer science or computer engineering majors.

The survey, "Bringing Girls into Corporate America," was conducted by Lake Snell Perry & Associates for Arthur Andersen from Aug. 9 to Aug. 16, 2000.
