Juggling work, personal lives
easier at smaller businesses

today's time-compressed world of work, employees of the smallest
firms have the least trouble balancing work and personal time, according
to their bosses. In fact, as a company gets bigger, it seems that
its workers have a harder time balancing their work and personal
lives.
That's according to a survey on company attitudes
toward work and personal life balance by Ronin Corporation for Office.com.
In companies with one to 25 employees, more
than a third (36 percent) of business owners surveyed in April-May
2000 disagreed that the work-personal time balancing act was a major
challenge for their employees. Thirty-five percent agreed, however,
and more than a quarter (28 percent) were neutral.
At companies with 26 to 100 workers, 29 percent
of managers disagreed that work-life issues were a major challenge,
with 30 percent agreeing and 41 percent neutral.
Managers at firms with 101 to 249 employees
said that 17 percent of their workers had no problems balancing
work and personal time, while 30 percent said it was a major challenge.
Forty-one percent were neutral.
Employees at businesses with 250 to 500 workers
seem to have the most conflicts. Only 15 percent of managers said
that time balance between work and home was not a major problem
for workers, while 32 percent said it was and more than half (53
percent) were neutral.
