How to pick a caterer

It's the entertaining season, but you may be too busy to plan the details yourself. If that's the case, then it's time to go to a pro -- a caterer.

But caterers can be as different as caviar and corn dogs, so it pays to shop around to find one that meets your needs and your budget. Here's how.

Finding the right caterer

Whether you're inviting friends to a festive meal in your home or putting out a spread at the office, planning the food can be a daunting task. A caterer can take the headaches out of planning, preparing and serving your food.

  • Begin by asking friends and associates for recommendations. Florists and party rental centers work with caterers all the time and will be able to give you some recommendations.
  • Find out if a potential caterer has a specialty.
  • Give potential caterers your budget range per guest right away and then ask for a suggested menu.
  • Ask for a list of references and call them.
  • Ask for a signed letter of agreement clearly outlining services, charges and potential additional charges for extra guests or added services. Make sure dates and times are clearly spelled out.
  • Touch base with your caterer again the week before your party to finalize the details of your party.

  • High school band directors will also sometimes recommend local high school students who perform at parties.
