10 steps to recruiting a recruiter -- and an employee

Recruiting firmsJust as you wouldn't hire an employee sight unseen, it's best to do a little research before hiring a recruiter. A little time taken now can save a lot of trouble later. Here are some things to do and keep in mind when evaluating a recruiter:

  1. Call a couple of each agency's clients to learn about how the agency operates.
  2. Call the Better Business Bureau for a reliability rating.
  3. Look for an agency with experience placing employees in your industry.
  4. Find out if the company has any type of follow-up policy with its customers and whether you'll be working with one counselor throughout the process or a team.
  5. Ask for and review a copy of the agency's standard letter of agreement or contract.
  6. Feel comfortable negotiating the fee. You may be able to save yourself some money if you're willing to work exclusively with one recruiter for a prearranged period.

  8. Be flexible. Supply and demand rule the employment marketplace and you may be advised to offer a higher salary than you expected.
  9. Think about what sets your company apart from all the rest. What can you tell your recruiter about your company to help sell the opportunity to a prospective candidate?
  10. Make sure prospective candidates are interviewed by decision-makers. This streamlines the interviewing process while introducing your candidates to the best and brightest in your company.
  11. Be prepared to make a decision on the candidate quickly.
