How safe is that safe?
Know the codes for rating safes

Office safesCan that safe in the corner delay a crook or protect its contents from a fire? And for how long?

Before you buy a safe, check out its ratings for a variety of situations.

Cracking the safe codes

Here is the key to unlocking the multitude of letters and numbers used to rate safes.

  • The B, or burglary, ratings are followed by numbers indicating the number of minutes it takes for the bad guys to break through different thicknesses of steel used in safe walls.
  • TL ratings relate to tool resistance and subsequent numbers tell you how long the walls will resist a burglar's tools.
  • A TR rating relates to a safe's ability to resist a burglar's torch.
  • An X in the rating lets you know that all sides of the safe are equally resistant to intruders. Thus, a safe rated TLTR15X6 will withstand both tools and torches for 15 minutes on any of its six faces.
  • Fire ratings indicate the length of time a box safe can keep its contents at safe temperatures in different fire conditions.
