Coupe | Performance
No matter how concerned buyers are about fuel
economy, it's a given that most still want a vehicle that accelerates well. We
rank the cars that deliver the most bang for buck.
It's not surprising
that the Corvette coupe ranks high
when it comes to performance. It comes
standard with a 430-horsepower 6.2-liter
V-8 and a six-speed manual transmission.
Chevrolet says it's an honest 190
mph car, comparable to Italian exotics
costing three times the Vette's $46,100
base price. Fuel mileage is 16-26
mpg city/highway. MSRP: $37,600.
This handsome coupe is a recent addition to the U.S. Audi lineup and it's just as fast as it looks. It leaps to 60 mph in under five seconds and, while it's not exactly thrifty on gasoline at an EPA rating of 14-21 mpg city/highway, it's more economical than you might expect for this level or performance. Base price: $50,500.
Dodge brings back its famed muscle car from the early 1970s. The styling is definitely reminiscent of the 1971 Challenger, though the new car is much larger than the original. Don't expect much in the way of fuel mileage -- 13-18 mpg city/highway. But the base price -- if you can find a dealer who will sell one at that price -- is $37,320.
