Unhappy at seeing sales go to BMW's X3 and Acura's RDX compact SUVs, Volvo has entered the fray for 2009 with the XC60. In keeping with Volvo's reputation, it bills the XC60 as "the safest Volvo ever,'' which is quite a boast. Behind that claim is Volvo's new "City Safety'' system, which at low speeds monitors the space between the XC60 and the vehicle in front, and, if it senses a collision, it will automatically apply the brakes. The XC60 comes to the U.S. with a 285-horsepower V-6 under the hood. No word yet on EPA mileage ratings or base prices.
