The Chevrolet Malibu returns in 2009 as General Motors' marque hybrid sedan. Combining a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine with a 36-volt electric motor, the Malibu squeezes out 26 miles per gallon in the city and 34 miles per gallon on the highway.

The Malibu shuts down its gasoline engine at complete stops to minimize idling and brings it back to life as soon as the driver eases off the brake pedal.

The electric motor and gas engine work in concert in most situations, with the electric motor offering an assist when the engine is at wide-open throttle, such as when you accelerate or pass on the highway.

The hybrid is Chevrolet's most fuel-efficient Malibu without carrying the highest price tag of that line.

Chevrolet warrants the key hybrid components for eight years or 100,000 miles.
