Toyota's crossover SUV, the Highlander, delivers 27 miles per gallon in the city and 25 miles per gallon on the highway, all with available seating for seven people. A 3.3-liter V6 engine works alongside a 288-volt electric motor.

The Highlander uses full-hybrid drive, meaning it can operate in an all-electric mode, all-gasoline mode or a combination of the two. Equipped with the tow package, it can haul 3,500 pounds.

The Highlander does not qualify for a federal tax credit because Toyota has already sold so many hybrid vehicles.
