ATM fees compared

In February 2000, Bankrate.com surveyed checking account, ATM and online pricing at 353 institutions. The institutions consist of the largest banks and thrifts, in terms of deposits, in each of the 35 largest markets. This study is conducted and updated every six months.

ATM Fees: Comparative information

Point-of-Sale Fee
The fee an institution charges its account holders to use an ATM card at a point-of-sale location, such as a grocery store or gas station.

  • 40 percent of institutions surveyed in 1994 charged
  • 24 percent of institutions surveyed in February 1999 charged
  • 16 percent of institutions surveyed in February 2000 charged
  • Fee for using another bank's ATM
    The fee an institution charges its account holders to use another institution's ATM.
  • 1993 average = $.86
  • 1994 average = $1.01
  • February 1999 average = $1.31
  • February 2000 average = $1.35
  • 88 percent of institutions offering ATM cards charged in 1999
  • 90 percent of institutions offering ATM cards charged in February 2000

  • ATM surcharges
    The fee an institution charges non-account holders for the use of its ATM.

  • Debuted in 1989
  • 83 percent of institutions charge
  • February 2000 average = $1.41
  • Surcharges range from $.75 to $3
  • $1.50 is the most common amount
  • Debit cards
    Card that can be used at a merchant point-of-sale terminal for purchases. The funds are immediately transferred from the customer's account to the merchant's account. Also known as a check card.

     

  • First surveyed in October 1999
  • 88 percent of institutions offer debit cards.
  • 91 percent charge the same fees for debit cards and ATM cards.
