Depending on how far you travel, how long you are
gone, how much gear you purchase and what activities you pay for,
a trip to a national park could cost you $10 or several hundred
dollars.
Beyond the magazine
National Geographic has a
catalog of adventures for families. You can cruise through Southeast
Alaska, viewing icebergs and whales, and then embark on a guided
tour through Glacier Bay National Park while an expert teaches your
children about the culture of Alaskan natives.
Or you can hike and canoe along the Lewis and Clark
expedition route. If you'd prefer something less strenuous, you
can travel by train through the western national parks while dining
in tony luxury on the American Orient Express.
These trips are definitely not for the light-of-wallet.
Prices range from $2,263 per person for a Caribbean family adventure
to $14,990 per person for a photography expedition to Antarctica.
More finance-friendly National Geographic adventures
can be found on their Deal
of the Week page. One of the packages featured was a seven-day
all-inclusive "Latin Destination" package starting at
$1,241, including round-trip airfare from select U.S. cities to
Machu Picchu.
Railroad trips
Amtrak has family
vacation packages that include railroad tickets, hotel and sightseeing.
Prices vary enormously by where you begin your trip and what class
of cabin you choose. Some destinations include New York, Atlanta,
New Orleans, San Francisco and the Grand Canyon in Williams, Ariz.
