Share the wealth

If you are interested in saving some money, honey, you are in the right place.

Our Savings Club gives readers a chance to exchange advice about saving money. Look at what our readers have been saying:

Stop those impulse purchases!

Always ask yourself before a purchase, "Do I really need or want this?" Wait as long as possible before purchasing, three weeks or more if possible. Then, see if that item you're thinking of buying still looks attractive to you. Those burning desires might stop burning over time. If you rushed to buy it, you're left with a purchase you don't really want or need and a debt you don't really want or need.

Ask for a good credit card deal!

This might be the most obvious thing in the world, but nobody seems to be doing it: To pay less interest and/or membership fees for your credit cards, call them and ask them if they can lower the interest rate. Normally they will do it -- no questions asked. If the person that you are talking to is giving you a hard time, ask to speak to the financial services department. I always recommend this to my friends, and every one has gotten lower rates. All you have to do is ask!

Work together on your budget and money!

We put all of our money in one account with both names. I get the checkbook and pay the bills since I'm better at saving. He asks me for some cash when he needs it, or he tells me how much he took out. We have outlined a budget that we both need to follow, so we both know about how much "free cash" we have each week to spend on ourselves after the bills are paid.

Save money on video rentals!

I have found that I can get free video rentals by checking them out at my local library. You would be surprised to see all that a good local library has to offer.

Prepare for retirement!

Pay yourself first. Take advantage of deferred compensation plans or 401(k) plans at your place of employment. If you can buy stock in your company, do so. Invest in mutual funds if possible. You are in for the long haul.
