Ian Rankin: No, you'd call my family blue-collar, working class. My parents never owned their own home, they always rented. They never owned a car. Our summer vacation tended to be a caravan site somewhere nearby. My dad worked in a grocery store for quite a long time and my mum worked in a factory canteen, dishing out meals to the workers. I was the first member of my family to go to college, so I suppose I was the black sheep of the family really.
