We
always hear health insurance stories of claim denials. Even "60 Minutes" did a
story on this topic. What has been your own personal health insurance nightmare
story?
Mine
is that they approve something and then when I go to get treatment, they refuse
to pay. I know I'm deaf, but I'm not dumb. If they approve it, they've got to
pay for it. I just went for a treatment for my hip. They OK'd it, but when it
came time to pay the bill, the insurance company changed their mind. I survived
cervical cancer 20 years ago and the insurance took much better care of me then
than they do now. The system has changed a great deal. I have a friend who was
literally on the operating table hooked up to IVs, and someone comes in and says,
"We have a problem -- we've just found out your insurance company has approved
your procedure, but not the anesthesia. What would you like us to do?" Why should
anyone have to have that kind of ridiculous stress?
 | Do
you think people really need life and home insurance policies? | Life
insurance, I think, depends upon your family situation. I personally don't need
life insurance. But home insurance is an absolute. With global climate change
looming, insurance is a must. And if I break a mirror and get stuck with seven
years of bad luck, I want my stuff to be covered! Renter's insurance is important
as well.
If
we made Kathy Buckley President for the day, what would you do to change insurance
policies and costs?
I
would definitely change things to be sure that every child is automatically covered
for medical costs. Health insurance should be made affordable to ALL people. No
mother should ever have to worry about her child's welfare and health due to lack
of income. Our seniors should be taken better care of, as well.
