Understanding insurance needs

Interview: Kathy Buckley

Do you think countries such as Canada and the U.K., for instance, have better health insurance programs through their governments than we do?

I know one thing -- anything is better than our current system. Pet insurance is better than some of the health insurance programs being offered. Should I bark and wag my tail?

Where do your specific concerns lie in regard to the general health-insurance crisis our nation is facing?

Well, children should be covered for medical, no matter what. People should be provided with better health screenings and better communication with their doctors. This would provide for early detection of a potential disaster. People need a better support system. We should be able to say "cancer" and "hope" in the same sentence, without worrying about what our insurance will pay -- or not pay.

What do you think the public should do in order to help change some of the insurance guidelines?

Everyone should write a letter to their senators. Call them. We are in desperate need of better health care. Write to your local representatives and tell them what your specific needs are. Everyone should do it without exception. Get your paper and envelope and I'll lick the stamp for you.

Medical insurance and pharmaceutical companies are sometimes not in sync. Can you talk about your feelings on the high costs of needed medicinal drugs?

First of all, why does it have to be so expensive in the first place? Can we not take the human being into consideration before the bill, for a change? Insurance companies should consider why we pay for health insurance in the first place. Americans have never been so afraid for their health because of the high prices of health care. The system is scaring us sick.
