Nigerian pet scam

James Randles, a U.S. Army private at the time, wanted a puppy so his Weimaraner would have a playmate. When he saw an ad on Craigslist.com for a free bulldog puppy (shown here), he contacted the seller. The seller, who claimed to be in Cameroon, said he wanted to give the puppy to someone in the United States and asked Randles for a mere $100 for the puppy's shipment overseas.

That was just the beginning, and hundreds of dollars later, with no puppy, Randles cut ties with the scammer. Here's his story.

The setup.

Randles responds to an ad he found on Craiglist.com, offering a free bulldog puppy named Betty. The scammer then baited him with the following e-mail:

The initial payment.

Randles sends a money order for $100 to pay for the puppy's shipment. When asked about the puppy's shipment, the scammer claims that a plane crash has delayed the puppy's departure for the United States.

Another fee is invented.

The scammer insists that if Randles pays $100 more, he will get his puppy. The scammer promises to refund this amount later. Randles finally says he will scrounge around for $100, and sends over a money gram.

The $650 phony tax.

Next, Randles receives a letter from France, where the puppy purportedly is being held at the airport. The dog needs a permit to enter the United States. The victim is asked to pay $650 for an obscure tax, which supposedly is refundable. Randles refuses to send the money. The scammer says he will pay the cost upfront, if the victim will refund him later.

Randles receives an e-mail supposedly from the FBI in Cameroon accusing him of working with the scammer. He's instructed to contact the agency as soon as possible if he wants to clear his name.

The final grab for money.

The scammer makes one final bid for money, this time by offering the assistance of a lawyer.

Randles is told he will have a lawyer, Walden Sama, who will represent him in court if he gets in contact with the attorney. Randles is asked to pay $500 for lawyer's fees.
