Ford Taurus vs. Ford Explorer
Of the vehicles selected for the IIHS crash tests, only Ford showed bumper systems that were aligned -- in this case between the Explorer and the Taurus. As a result, when the two collided at 10 mph, the bumpers absorbed most of the crash energy, holding damage estimates far below that of four other pairs of SUVs and passenger cars.

When a Volvo S40 passenger car rammed the back of the Volvo XC90 SUV at 10 mph, it received the most damage of the test pairings -- $4,984. The sedan's front bumper slipped under the rear bumper of the SUV.

With no bumper engagement to absorb the energy, the S40's hood buckled, its front fenders crumpled, and the headlights broke. The repair bill for the SUV was a more modest $1,096.
With the roles reversed, the XC90 hit the S40 above the sedan's rear bumper, resulting in damage to the SUV of $1,695 and $2,361 to the S40.

Daimler disparity
The worst total damage in the test series occurred when DaimlerChrysler AG's Jeep Grand Cherokee encountered the rear of a Dodge Stratus. The higher front bumper on the SUV crunched the car's trunk lid and rear fenders to the tune of $3,281, while the SUV damage was only slightly less at $2,848 for a combined damage to the two vehicles totaling $6,129.

When the Stratus, in turn, smacked the Grand Cherokee at 10 mph, the car took the brunt of the damage -- $3,256 -- while the higher SUV got a $1,279 chunk removed.

An under-ride-override situation in the clash between a Nissan Altima and a Nissan Murano SUV resulted in damage so extensive to the Altima that it would have had to be towed away in a real-life situation.

Toyota RAV4: No rear guard
If these car-SUV collisions are not bad enough, consider the Toyota RAV4, a downsized SUV that has no rear bumper at all. The IIHS also tested this popular line, but instead of using a passenger car in the mix, it used two RAV4s. The results: a whopping $7,610 in damages from a 10-mph front-into-rear crash.

The spare tire on the tailgate -- which some consumers may believe would absorb some of the crash energy -- actually caused $4,380 in damage to the hood and grille of the striking RAV4. The spare also helped crush the tailgate it was mounted on, causing another $3,230 in damage.
