Checklist for easing the burden of your funeral

The National Funeral Directors Association suggests five steps to save your loved ones money, time and stress in advance of your death.

1. Plan ahead
Have all members of the family get together and discuss the subject. Be sure they are clear on all of your wishes for the occasion.

2. Establish funeral values
Because people have different religious, social and cultural values, identify what kind of funeral service and merchandise you require. Do you want visitation, open or closed casket, burial service or cremation? If there is an open casket, embalming might be required. Do you want that? Basically, how do you want to dispose of the body.

3. Shop around
Find a funeral home and director that best fits your family's individual and personal requirements. Ask family members, friends, neighbors for recommendations.

4.Gather information
The federal government requires funeral homes to provide a detailed list of services and merchandise. Sign a statement of goods and services. Know what you're getting and have it in writing.

5. Figure out payment
Find a plan which you are comfortable with, whether its insurance or a certificate of deposit or just buying a casket in advance.
