Sample moving estimate

Here is a sample moving estimate compiled by the American Moving and Storage Association. It's easy to see how much money can be saved by doing some of the packing yourself.

Here's what we're assuming in this fictitious move from Los Angeles to New York City.

  • 2 bedroom home (1,000 to 1,200 pounds per room, no extraordinary items, no crating antiques, etc.) 6,000 pounds total moving.
  • 2,796 miles (Rand McNally mileage guide)
  • 4 appliances -- washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer. Only the washer will need servicing.
  • 1 stair carry in NYC
  • No additional valuation coverage
  • No unusual services -- crating, hoisting, overtime loading or unloading.
  • Average applied discount (56 percent.) This will vary based on time of year, carrier and business-line preferences.
